WHAT DO THE CAMPS OFFER?

  • An infusion of literacy, technology, and the arts.
  • A mentorship with Jefferson County High School students.
  • Parent and community literacy awareness.

Project REACH includes several Summer Literacy Camps to serve “at risk” students entering grades 1-5 in Jefferson County Schools. Research indicates that children lose as much as 6 month’s progress during the summer months. Camps Read Along will provide reading & writing reinforcement fused with the arts in a relaxed “fun” atmosphere to get students off to a running start in the fall.

Last year we had 4 camps with approximately 50-80 students at each camp. All ESL students were invited to participate. Each Camp ran for four weeks starting at the end of May 2005. The sessions were for three hours each day, five days each week. Each site had 6 classroom teachers, 1 administrator, and a site coordinator. Two sites also had an ESL teacher. The Enrichment in Arts Staff rotated to be at each site every other day.
