Adam and Eve and Pinch-Me by Julie Johnston tells the story of a tough
foster kid named Sara Moone. Sara is biding her time with the most recent
foster parents, Ma and “Hud”, until she turns sixteen and can be on
her own. She keeps cool, avoiding connections, relationships, entanglements.
Who can blame her? Her own mother deserted her when she was an infant, then her adopted parents died in a fire. To Sara, connections equal pain and disappointment. Nope, it's just Sara and her computer; she doesn't need anything else. But a few persistent people show Sara that they need her, and she must make a decision. |
Lucky's father
simply leaves; he doesn't want children. She then loses her mom in a freak
accident. Now it seems that Brigitte, her guardian, wants to head back
to France. Lucky tries to fend for herself, working at one of the few paying
jobs in town--she picks up trash after anonymous meetings. Listening in on
the recovering alcoholics, overeaters, and gamblers, Lucky hears them describe
getting control of their lives through a "Higher Power." Lucky wants to find
her Higher Power, and fast, before she loses Brigitte. The 2007 Newbery Award
winner The Higher Power of Lucky is
