Lesson Title:   Princess and the Pea
FOR THE TEACHER

LESSON OVERVIEW

Students will put into practice what they have learned about Punnet Squares and Mendel’s work on cross pollination.  Gives students opportunity to practice what they have learned about cross pollination and genetics.

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

Using math skills with Science, Can the student produce the correct pea for the princess to sleep on for a specific amount of money knowing that each pollination costs a bag of gold.

 TN STANDARDS

8.4.4Predict the genotypes of offspring in a monohybrid cross using a punnett square. {Science}

8.1.3 Use ratios and proportions to represent real-world situations (i.e., scale drawings and probability).{Math}

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Students must record on a sheet their choices of peas chosen, money spent, and results.   Student will have to SHOW teacher on screen when objective (25 wrinkled peas) has been achieved.  Sheet will have questions on information viewed to be answered and turned in.

LESSON ORGANIZATION

Opening the Lesson:
5  minutes

Teacher introduction in computer lab on what is to be accomplished:

  1. Web address on handout typed into bar. Be sure all students reached destination.  http://biologica.concord.org/webtest1/web_labs.htm
  2. Students will be going though the process on screen and filling out lab sheet throughout class.

Developing the Lesson:
35  minutes

Students will follow instructions on screen .

  1. First going through the meiosis stages and watching the short animations under each pea.
  2.   When this is complete students need to click on the pedigree tab at the top of the box and read information.
  3. Click on Activity when this is completed. Read the brief story/description of the princess’s story. Follow the instructions.  Students will have to pick their pea and drag to the circles. Upon choosing they will click on two of the three peas. They will see a line appear that says cross pollinate. They have made their first choice. They will then choose two peas from the offspring to choose the next set of cross pollination.  This continues till they have spent all their money or achieved 25 wrinkled peas.

Closing the Lesson:
5 minutes

Exit website.  Stop all activities. Turn in sheets with answers. Be sure name/date/class per at top.

TEACHING RESOURCES

Computer lab- put in pairs if necessary, but individual computer stations are best.

Worksheets to follow instructions and answer questions on.

LAB SAFETY

No food, drink or gum in computer lab. Follow all lab rules as listed in classroom.

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR SPECIAL LEARNERS

Should not need to be modified on general bases. May need to place student with another that can read if student is unable to read the material. Can put students in pairs at a computer to assist.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES

Students may want to search remainder of site or explore the 3D cell. This is a very interesting interactive cell structure. QuickTime is required. If students complete task very quickly. Have an additional website or websites for students to search for Genetics, heredity, Mendel’s Peas, or Dominant and Recessive Traits. This may even be to a genetic counseling website or a real life perspective on how these things are used in the medical field.

STANDARDIZED TEST ITEM GENERATOR

This website has a link for all grades and subjects of practice questions that have been released by the state for testing practice.  On the listed released questions for 8th grade Science there are nine questions on heredity, genetics and DNA. Too many to list in this space.

Lab Sheet Question Suggestions:

1.     What is the first step in meisois?

2.     Watch for the following stages. Do you see these things happening?( see picture below- great to teach with before going to lab.)

3.     After watching meiosis click on Pedigree tab at top of box.   Go through pedigree of peas.

4.     Upon completing pedigree click on Activity Tab at top of box.

5.     Read through the Princess and the Pea.   Complete the activity and record your results as you go.
