Lesson Title:        Using Punnett Squares

LESSON OVERVIEW

How Punnet Squares work. How to make them. How to use them.

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

Students will make and use Punnett Squares to determine the offspring of mice

 

 TN STANDARDS

8.4.2 Examine differences between dominant and recessive traits.

a.       Use the results of a test cross to distinguish between dominant and recessive traits.

b.      Construct and interpret Punnett Squares to determine the genotype and phenotype of offspring.

 

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Students will be formatively assessed using the Student data sheet and the Follow- Up data sheet.  Students will have performance based assessment as well during the Puppet show as well.

LESSON ORGANIZATION

Opening the Lesson:
5  minutes

We need to be sure you understand how a Punnett Square works and how to read a Punnett Square.

Developing the Lesson:
35  minutes

Students will work in groups to complete the Student-Data sheet.  Teacher will circulate the room spot checking for understanding and guiding students through sheet.  With lower level students doing the sheet to together may be advantageous to be sure they are grasping the concept.

Closing the Lesson:
5 minutes

Ask for questions from the students based on what they have done today.  Ask questions based on their punnett squares to check for ability to read the punnett square correctly.

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR SPECIAL LEARNERS

Put with a peer tutor to help them through this.  Special learners will function very well with producing the puppet show and puppets for the mice puppet activity.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES

Mice Puppets – showing the genetics of the offspring of the parent mice.   Students create puppets and perform puppet show for peers or even for lower grades to show how heredity is passed.
