TENNESSEE LESSON PLAN BUILDER Lesson Title: The Screw                                                                                                            Prepared by Carrie Lane and Jade Beam Fourth grade To explain and demonstrate the function and attributes of the screw as a simple machine. INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS The learner will can an understanding of simple machines. The learner will use appropriate tools for measurement. The learner will gain an understanding of geometric shapes and be able to discuss it mathematically. Science4.11.2 Recognize the relationship between force and motion. Explain how speed affects the distance traveled. Recognize simple machines (e.g., inclined plane, pulley, lever). Mathematics   4.2.spi.6. apply basic function rules.   4.3.tpi.3. develop and use mathematical language to describe the attributes of geometric figures; FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT The student will be assessed on how well they have conduct and collaborate the activity. LESSON ORGANIZATION Opening the Lesson: 10 minutes Begin the lesson by giving a brief introduction of simple machines and their function. Continue instruction by explaining the screw, and its function. Developing the Lesson: 20  minutes The first activity consists of giving each student a paper incline plane and a piece of tape. The students wrap the incline plane around a pencil to create the example of a screw. Closing the Lesson: 20 minutes Conclude the lesson by demonstrating how the various threads of a screw grip the wood differently. Demonstrate by screwing them into a block of wood. TEACHING RESOURCES Paper inclined plane, tape, pencil, screws with various thread configurations, block of wood, and screw driver. LAB SAFETY Do not allow children to have screws. ACCOMMODATIONS FOR SPECIAL LEARNERS Give them extra assistance by working in groups. ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES Using the internet they could do more research on simple machines and create a collage of simple machines.
