Changes in
Matter |
INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS |
The learner will be able to differentiate between a physical change The learner will be able to differentiate between a physical change |
Identify chemical change Identify physical change |
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT |
The learner will be given examples of changes in matter and asked to identify as a chemical or physical change |
LESSON ORGANIZATION |
Opening the Lesson:
The teacher will randomly ask the learners to define the terms chemical and physical change. |
Developing the Lesson:
The learner will be given examples of physical changes. For example, a class of ice cubes and a glass of water. This will be identified as a physical change. The teacher will engage the learner in conversation about the different examples of physical changes and why they are physical changes. As student show understanding of physical changes, introduce chemical change to them (because physical and chemical changes are sometimes difficult for students, 3rd graders, to understand. The teacher may want to divide the lesson into two lessons, physical and chemical). |
Closing the Lesson:
Randomly give examples of changes and ask the learner to identify as a physical or chemical change. |
TEACHING RESOURCES |
Materials: examples of matter chosen by the teacher that show physical and chemical changes |
LAB SAFETY |
Make sure that examples to show chemical and physical changes are demonstrated with the learner seated far away . This safety concern depends on what examples the teacher chooses to give. |
ACCOMMODATIONS FOR SPECIAL LEARNERS |
Preferential seating to ensure examples are seen and instruction from teacher is clear for students with vision and hearing disabilities |
