Lesson Title:   All  Matter Has Properties

STAGE OF LEARNING CYCLE: Lesson II
FOR THE TEACHER

Go to FOR THE STUDENT…

LESSON OVERVIEW

Properties of Matter

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

The learner will understand that all matter has properties.

The learner will be able to identify the properties of an object.

Know and understand Vocabulary:  property

 TN STANDARDS

Science Recognize that objects have observable properties that can change over time and under different conditions.

Science Classify materials according to their physical properties.

Math    Select and use appropriate tools to observe and measure the physical properties of materials.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

The learner will be engaged in learning through an anticipation guide.  The anticipation guide increases the learner comprehension because it focuses their attention towards content to be presented.  Unconsciously students will be assimilating and accommodating new information with old information.  Anticipation guide:  has true and false statements about matter and basic properties. The learner states whether they think the statements are true or false.  When everyone has answered, statements are checked by teacher as a whole class.  During active learning, the teacher addresses those questions and proves why they are true or false.  ***  make sure questions target the objectives to be addressed in lesson.

LESSON ORGANIZATION

Opening the Lesson:
_15_ minutes

Show the learner several objects.  Ask the learner to describe each object. As the   learner responds, record answers on the board for the whole class to see.

Developing the Lesson:
5
_ minutes

Inform the learner that all matter has properties and the list in front of them (given by the learner-opening) shows the properties of the objects shown.  The teacher should state, “When an objects shape, color, smell, size etc. are identified, that is its properties.”

Closing the Lesson:
15_
minutes

Ask the learner to state the properties of objects they see or don’t see.  After they give their example, ask the learner why that is a property.  The learner’s answer should reflect that size, shape, color, etc. are properties.

After lesson, give the learner a chance to correct any questions before reviewing as a whole class

TEACHING RESOURCES

Materials:  textbook, objects to be described, large post-it note for recording and/or dry-erase board and markers (the post-it note allows the teacher to post information in class for teacher and students to refer to throughout the unit).

LAB SAFETY

No safety concerns

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR SPECIAL LEARNERS

Preferential seating to ensure examples are seen and instruction from teacher is clear  for students with vision and hearing  disabilities

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES

United Streaming Videos:  The videos should be viewed in the order they are listed.

Matter and Its Properties: Observing the Properties of Matter (Teacher should use the worksheet available from video!!  These are excellent for pre-assessment and post-assessment

LEARNING GOALS

Student learning goals: to identify the properties of matter, to understand that all matter has properties than can be identified using the five senses ( an objects size, shape, smell, taste, and color are its properties).

ASSESSMENT

Comprehension will be determined through  responses from group discussion, group activities, and quizzes from United Streaming Video

Quiz : ask the learner to list properties of objects shown by the teacher.  To exercise the learner thinking skills, the teacher may ask the learner to give a specific number of properties.  This will keep the learner from giving the basic (easiest) properties.
