Lesson Title:                                                                                                                      STAGE OF LEARNING CYCLE:
The Nine (Eight) Planets

Go to FOR THE STUDENT…

LESSON OVERVIEW

This lesson will use a United Streaming video to present information about the planet and their distance form the sun.  After the video a power point will be used to review/reinforce what they have seen.  Next students will be divided into pairs or teams and they will take a more in depth look at a particular planet.  The small groups will then briefly present interesting information about the plant they researched.  Finally students will work in these teams to put planet picture cards in order according to their distance from the sun.

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

The students will be able to put the planets in order according to their distance from the sun.

 TN STANDARDS

Identify and order the planets in the solar system by their distance from the sun.

Determine the order of the planets according to their distance from the sun.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Students will be assessed on their ability to put the planet picture cards in order according to their distance from the sun.

LESSON ORGANIZATION

Opening the Lesson:
5 minutes

Class will work together to make a list of what we already know about the plants.  Discuss the things that may or may not be true and any gaps in our list.

Developing the Lesson:
35 minutes

Show the United Streaming that gives a basic overview of the planets in order according to their distance from the sun.  Use the Powerpoint to go back and discuss the major points of the video.  After reviewing the Powerpoint divide the students into pairs giving each pair and particular planet to learn more about.  Have them use the internet sources find out more detailed and interesting information about their planet.  They need to record at least four things about their planet to share with the class (see enrichment activities for worksheet that would help guide in the gathering information process).     Once the groups have had time to find the needed information about their planet, have students share what they found out about their planet with the class.  Make sure that they share in order of planets distance from the sun.

Closing the Lesson:
5 minutes

After all group have shared, pass out planet picture cards for each pair and they will work together to put the cards in order according to their distance from the sun.

Site for enrichment and connecting math: Jupiter is Average

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR SPECIAL LEARNERS

Lower level students or students who are unfamiliar with computers can be paired with higher level or computer literate students.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES

A copy of the solar system cards can be created for each student along with information cards which the students can cut out, pair and glue to construction paper.

Copy worksheets for each group to complete about their planet.  These worksheet would be a more guided way to gather information about a particular planet.
