LESSON OVERVIEW

Students will be introduced to formulas and review concepts for solving equations.

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

Students will be able to transform literal equations and to be able to solve problems using formulas.

 TN STANDARDS

 

Math Standards    2.11 – Model real world phenomena using functions and graphs.

                           3.14 – Articulate and apply algebraic properties in symbolic manipulation.

                           3.6 – Communicate the meaning of variables in algebraic expressions and equations.

 

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Check oral responses, class work, and examples.

LESSON ORGANIZATION

Opening the Lesson:
_5_ minutes

Review rules for solving equations, discuss inverse operations, and review definitions.

Developing the Lesson:
_35_ minutes

Students will complete note taking guide, do examples as a class, and practice problems.  Students will complete the calculations for the Free Fall Lab

Closing the Lesson:
_5_ minutes

Review process for solving literal equations.  Assignment is from the Prentice Hall Algebra I textbook pp. 113 # 1-24, 29-40.

TEACHING RESOURCES

Prentice Hall Algebra I textbook, overhead projector, note taking guide transparencies, practice workbook  Free Fall Lab, tape measure, stopwatch, and a variety of objects such as feather, balls, blocks of wood,.etc.
