The Classroom Pet Exchange is
for classrooms, grades K-3. Classes participating in the Class Pet
Exchange Program will need to secure a stuffed animal for the class
pet. Students should select a name for the pet. You will also need some
type of notebook or journal. It is helpful if you have e-mail access in
your classroom, but not required. If you do not have this access, you must
be able to send weekly emails from another location in order to participate.
One of the biggest problems
with any Internet project is the participant not following through on their
end. Before you sign up for this project, ask yourself these questions:
-
Will I correspond weekly with
my exchange class?
-
Will I mail our class pet and
its journal to our exchange class?
-
Will I return our exchange class'
pet and its journal through the mail?
If the answer to these questions
is yes, you are ready to proceed. (Remember your failure to carry through
with the project will result in a class full of disappointed children and
a frustrated teacher!)
Still not sure the project
will work for your class? Read what other past participants have
said about the project by clicking the Participant
Feedback link above. A list of the project
objectives is also available at the web site.
If you feel you are now ready
to commit to the project, follow these 5 steps:
1. Complete the
sign-up
form on this site. Be sure to double check your email address as
this is the only means of contacting you. Registration deadline is
November 20, 2004.
2. After submitting
the sign-up form you will receive confirmation and your name will be added
to the classroom database in order to
begin participation in the project.
3. You will then search
the database and choose a class that you think you would like to partner
with for the exchange.
4. You are ready to
contact the class and begin! Click on the email link for that class
at the Classroom Database and send an
introductory email, provide mailing information, and set up the schedule
for your exchange. A sample introductory
email is provided below. If you
receive an introductory email contact from a class asking you to be their
exchange partner, be sure to check the database for that class' name.
A parent
letter, which explains the project, may be printed directly from
the web site. Additional schedule
information may be found at this site.

| Hello! We located your name in the
Classroom Pet Exchange database and would be interested in knowing if you
would like to be our partner for the 2002-2003 exchange. We have
replied to the commitment email and agreed to correspond weekly, mail our
pet and journal, and return your pet and journal at the end of the exchange.
You can locate our class in the database by going to the third grade classes,
and finding Mrs. Hileman's Class. We live in Spring City, Kentucky
which is a small farming community. If you would like to exchange
pets with us, please email us and we will set up our schedule for the exchange
along with mailing information.
