school safe
Don't forget the sunscreen!  It's easy to think that a sunburn won't hurt me but over time repeated sunburns can cause skin cancer.
We are seeing more accidents now that the kids are getting outside to play.  There is very little in the way of infections going around, but a lot of allergy related illness.

KNOXVILLE AREA #1 in nation for allergies!

Please remember to let the school nurse know if your child has a medical condition or change in medical condition as well as all medications your child takes at home.

 EVERYONE STILL NEEDS TO

WASH HANDS
COVER COUGH WITH ARM OR TISSUE
EAT HEALTHY
STAY HOME WHEN ILL

PLEASE do not send your child to school if he/she had a fever the day before or the day of school.  It is a good idea to invest in a thermometer to check your child's temperature.  I do not send them home usually if they do not have a fever, so please refer the the Guidelines for Illness later on this page.
Please check the Jefferson County Schools website for our Influenza Plan.

For information on this year's flu vaccine, please go to the Centers for Disease Control website link at the bottom of the page.

It's time to start planning for your summer garden.
Start planting those warm-season vegetables like tomatoes, okra, corn and many other, etc.  I have purchased a small greenhouse at Big Lots and started several of my plants from seeds.  My seeds are  ready to transplant. Raised beds are really easy and for the smaller gardener the best way to go.

Gardening is fun and really good exercise - it is also great for relaxing and emotional wellness.  Kids will enjoy watching their plants grow and then harvesting the plants to eat!!

Immunization Requirements
Parents of kindergarten will have new requirements for the 2011-2012.  Students entering 7th grade will be required to have additional immunizations.

All students entering Jefferson County Schools must have proof of immunizations on a Certificate of Immunization form available from your physician or the county health dept.  Students coming from out of state must also have proof of a physical examination within the last 6 months.  Call the school at (865) 933-5313 for questions.

What a blessing!

A very BIG THANK YOU to my sister-in-law, former Rush Strong student Margaret Faye (Finchum)Magee and Glenns Bay Dental for the donations of lots more of trial size toothpaste for our Lost Tooth Club!!!

Also, a BIG THANK YOU to Mrs. Geraldine Day and the Presybterian Women for donations of clothing, underwear and personal items for the clinic!!!  We couldn't help students without THEIR help.

Hello, Rush Strong families!
It is my pleasure to be serving the students, staff and families of Rush Strong again this year.  This is a great school-students and staff!!
This page is dedicated to keeping you informed of current health issues as they develop and hopefully provide you with information to help you make decisions about your child's health.  It is not intended to replace your physician or make diagnosis of your child's condition.
Our goal is to keep students in the classroom.
In general, student's are not sent home unless they have fever, are vomiting and/or having diarrhea.  If your student is ill with fever, please keep them home until they are fever-free for 24 hours without medication.  If your child has a cold or allergy, medicate them before school.  Encourage your student to wash their hands frequently and cover their nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing.

Guidelines for your ill child

One of the goals of our clinic is to keep students in class as much as possible, but we also don't wants students in the classroom who are very ill and exposing others to the illness. Here are some guidelines to help you make an informed decision about whether to send your student to school. May I emphasize that it is extremely important that the school know how to reach a parent or other designated person in the event of illness or emergency.

A New Thank You to Dr. Tarr at Tarr Eye and Vision Center for the donation of contact lense solution and lense cases to our clinic.

What happened to breakfast?
Many times it doesn't happen because we are running late.  Studies have shown that breakfast is THE most important meal of the day.  Students perform better academically and their behavior improves when they have a good, healthy breakfast.

Here are some ideas to help you choose a good start to each day:

oatmeal bars, cereal bars, granola bars
oatmeal
yogurt tubes or cups
peanut butter or lunch meat sandwich
leftovers
low fat cheese toast
traditional - eggs, toast, cereal with milk
fruits

vegetables

Rush Strong serves breakfast and lunch daily.  We also offer free or reduced cost lunches.

Forms are available in the office

Lost Tooth Club

Our Lost Tooth Club is in full swing.  Last year we had over 250 teeth on the tree.
A BIG THANKS to Western Heights Dental in Knoxville for the donation of toothbrushes and my wonderful sister-in-law, Margaret Faye Magee for the donation of toothpaste!
Here's how our club works: each student who loses a tooth, even at home, gets to put a tooth on the tooth tree bulletin board in the cafeteria.  With the each tooth lost, they receive a NEW TOOTHBRUSH and TOOTHPASTE (while it lasts).  We encourage students to brush at least twice daily (and three times is even better).  We also encourage parents to change toothbrushes every 3 months and after any illness.

This year every student was screened by a dentist for problems and to receive sealants on molars.  The sealants are provided to any one who needed them for free.

If you need a dentist and cannot afford one, the Jefferson Rural Clinic provides dental care.  Also, Western Heights Dental at 801 W. Oldham Ave. in Knoxville is a TennCare dental provider.

Mrs. Aaron's new class this year is continuing the tradition and healthy habit.
Best wishes for a healthy smile!!

You WILL see the good results for a lifetime!

  Thanks also go to the
Democratic Women
who made a cash donation to the clinic last year!!
This money helped buy supplies that can only be purchased from a medical supply store.
