JCHS History Day

Students with an interest in history are encouraged to participate in the East Tennessee regional competition of National History Day.  That competition takes place in early March on the University of Tennessee campus in Knoxville and is co-hosted by the East Tennessee Historical Society.  Those who place either first, second, or third place are eligible to participate in the statewide competition held in April in Nashville.  There are also a number of prizes awarded other than the category awards.  For example, the best project on an American Indian topic receives a $100 check.

Those who participate in the Knoxville competition will be excused from school that day.  We will meet at the University Center for registration, followed by a welcome time in the auditorium.  After that, the competitions will take place.  We will have a lunch break and come back in for the awards ceremony in the afternoon.  It will be the student's responsibility to arrange for transportation to and from Knoxville.

Any student who is eligible to compete at the state level, will leave school on a Friday to travel to Nashville.  We will arrange hotel accommodations for that night.  In addition to the competition on Saturday, we will also arrange for some entertaining/educational activities while in town.  The specifics will be determined through discussions with those participating.  Examples include dinner at Planet Hollywood, a tour of Fort Nashborough, a visit to the Tennessee State Museum or the Parthenon, or even a riverboat ride on the Cumberland River.

Categories for the projects include exhibit, performance, paper, documentary, or website.  For a description of categories, check out the National History Day website.  A link is provided on the homepage of this site.

Below are the decisions interested students need to make, as well as deadlines for when parts of the projects are due.  Because so many things can get in the way and delay the work, please do not wait until the day of the deadline to share with me.
