Policies
All school policies found in the student handbook of Jefferson County High School apply to my classroom.  There are a few general policies that I wish to emphasize to you.

1)  There will be no eating or drinking in my classroom with the following exceptions:

      • Chewing Gum
      • Bottled water
All other forms of food or drink will be confiscated and disposed of immediately.  The second time this becomes a problem it will be handled as disrespect and turned over to an administrator.

2)  THE CELL PHONE POLICY STANDS AS IT SAYS!!! NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!!  NO ARGUMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED!!!!

3)  Be on time to class.  Each student gets 1 free tardy for the semester.  After the accumulation of three tardies, the student will be referred to an administrator.  As long as you are in the room before the bell rings, you will be considered on time.  I reserve the right to change when you have to be in the room based on abuse of the policy by the class.

4)  Sleeping will not be permitted in my class.  A participation grade of 100 points will be given at the end of each 9 weeks.  EVERY time I have to wake a student up (this could be multiple times in a class period), I will take 5 points from that grade.  In the unlikely, but possible, event that all 100 points are drained before the end of the 9 weeks, I will begin deducting 1 point from the final grade.

5)  Each student handbook has, in the back, a hall pass for the student to use if they need to leave the room for any reason.  I will allow students to use the restroom, ect... when they need to, however, they must have a hall pass with them to leave.  This is a simple matter of being responsible and I believe young teenagers can handle this level of responsibility.

Misbehavior
When dealing with classroom disturbances, I have a simple approach.  The students make their own choice to misbehave.  I believe that no one can force a student to misbehave and once that choice has been made, they must then choose to accept the consequences.  I handle all discipline myself with the exception of major violations or constant offenders.  I am not a police officer, I do not patrol my room waiting for someone to break the rules.  I trust that my students know how to behave until they prove me wrong.  For those instances, I handle it with the following consequences:

1)  Warning- usually non verbal or private

2)  Private conference in the hallway

3)  2nd private conference in the hallway- rearrange seating

4)  Referral to an administrator

Tardies will be dealt with according to the tardy policy.  After the third tardy, the student will be referred to an administrator.

Grading Policy
My grades are based on a point system.  I assign each individual assignment a point value.  At the end of each 9 weeks, I divide the number of points achieved by the number of points possible for each student and a grade is determined.  The grading scale is as follows:
                                    A:  93-100
                                    B:  85-92
                                    C:  75-84
                                    D:  70-74
                                    F:  69 and below

Participation Grade- Each student will receive a participation grade.  This grade is a 100 given to the student at the beginning of each 9 weeks.  From that 100, points can be deducted for several different things over the course of the grading period.  Some of them are, but not limited to:

§         Tardy to class:  -1 point

§         Sleeping in class: -5 points

§         Not having book/materials: -2 points

§         Not completing readings: -3 points

Makeup Policy
The INDIVIDUAL STUDENT is responsible for getting any work they may have missed due to absences.  The number of days a student has to make up work they have missed will be equal to the number of school days that student was absent.  For example:

Student misses Monday through Wednesday (3 days), then returns to class on Thursday- They will have 3 days to make up their work(Thursday, Friday, and Monday).  The work would then be due to me by class time on Tuesday.

Work completed in class will be posted daily on the individual class website.  This will enable parents and students to keep up with what was missed while they were gone and as always the current chapter's notes will be available on the website.

Test makeups:  If you are absent on the day of a test, then you may have the entire 9 weeks to make it up.  However, once again it is YOUR responsibility to make up the test.  YOU must come to me and arrange a time.  If you are absent the day before a test and we did not cover new material the day you were absent, you must take the test with the rest of the class.  If we are called out of school for any reason (snow, flood, heat, ect.) on the day of a test, the test will be given the first day you come back.

Any and all work not made up by the end of the 9 week grading period will be given a score of 0.

Class Notes
I will put the current chapter's notes on the individual class website.  Students may print these notes and bring them to class.  Students will still be responsible for lecture/discussion not on the internet or PowerPoint.  For students who do not have Internet access at home, the achievement center and writing labs are open from 8:00-8:20, during break from 9:50-10:10, and during lunch when they don't have a class.  For those without internet access at home, I keep paper copies of all makeup work, but it is the STUDENT'S responsibility to get it from me.

Classroom Website:

There is a class website that goes along with this course.  The use of this website is REQUIRED.  I do realize that access to the internet may be limited in some cases, however, access to the site is available at school in one of the computer labs.  These labs are open for access before school, during lunch, and after school.  There is a computer available in my classroom as well.  If internet access is a problem please indicate this on the signed class guidelines sheet that is sent home.

Extra Credit:

Extra credit is offered for this class.  It is obtained through Coach Jones.  No one may earn more than 50 points extra credit during the SEMESTER.
