GOALS 2000 QUARTERLY REPORT

LEA:  Jefferson County                                        Project Name:  Project LA

Project Contact:  Connie Campbell                  Date of Report:   April 10, 2002

Please answer the following questions in as much detail as possible.

You may use attachments.

1.      Using specifics compare your timeline and benchmarks in the grant to what is actually occurring in your project.

January 2002 Participants created lesson plans and language arts activities that utilize word processing (Word) to teach a language arts objective identified by the teacher as partial or non-mastered on the TerraNova tests.  These are stored at the Project LA website (http://208.183.128.8/la/activities/index.html).

February-March 2002 Participants developed multimedia presentations directed to address a language arts objective previously identified as an area of weakness. The presentation included links to related Internet sites.  These are stored at the Project LA website (http://208.183.128.8/la/activities/pptresources.html) and can be viewed online or downloaded to the user’s computer.

April 2002 At our April meeting teachers will use Word to develop student-created classroom newsletters that will focus on cross-curriculum composition and Internet resources to improve student communication skills.

2.      What progress have you made toward reaching the objectives and goals that you set in your proposal?

The teacher will explore and identify learning and teaching styles that enhance the environment of learning for all students. (Jefferson County Technology School Improvement Plan Goal)

On March 25-28 TerraNova testing was conducted to all students.  When these test results are returned a comparison of lower achieving student gains to higher and highest achieving student gains from Terra Nova scores (2000-2001) will be prepared by the technology coordinator and instructor.  This report will also be shared with the county’s elementary education and special education supervisor to determine the impact of and planning for future teacher technology integration approaches.

Increase Student Performance Data/Student Expectations. (School Improvement Plan)

Both the Classroom Performance System (CPS) and the Orchard Language Arts program have been used throughout the school year to track student performance.  As results are returned from TerraNova testing, a comparison of student objective mastery on the 2000 and 2001 test in language will be made.

3.      What progress has been made toward the National Goal or Goals as you presented in your proposal?

Improved student achievement through the use of technology as a tool to enhance the curriculum. (National Goals)  TestMate Clarity will provide a comparison of student objective mastery through a comparison of the 2000 and 2001 scores in language arts on the TerraNova test as test results are received.

4.      At this point, how is the Goals 2000 funding positively affecting the education of the children in your county?

Through this project teachers have become more involved and learned to utilize technology as an instructional tool.  They have learned to gain more control over technology instead of letting it control them.  Through this new confidence the students have benefited as teachers have made technology more of a part of their instruction and learners have had more exposure to it.

We have also gained a large database of teacher-created PowerPoint presentations that will be available to any educator through our website.  At the end of the project we will create a CD compilation of this body of work.

5.      Describe some great happenings concerning your project.  Please send any      articles or documentation to us for our files.

I have already received an email from one teacher who participated in this project asking if she might be a part of any technology professional development project offered in the upcoming school year.  This is a great happening since this teacher has never previously shown an interest in utilizing technology, but now seems not only excited about its usage, but anxious to learn more!

At the March 22 East Tennessee Administrator’s Technology Academy we were able to share our online resources created by these participating teachers with other school systems.  These administrators were greatly impressed with the quality of resources teachers were developing through Project LA.
