homework padHomework Policy

This will help explain the homework policy for my classroom.  Please read this carefully with your child  so that you understand the expectations of studnets and parents with regard to homework.  Following these guide lines can help decreade tension associated with homework and increase your child's learning.  For your child to be successful with homework, he/she needs:

A place to do homework.  If possible, your child should do his/her homework in the same place (an uncluttered, quiet space to study.)

A schedule for completing homework.  Set a schedule that fits in with each week's particular activities.  I assign homework nightly and it is due the next morning.  If you know your child has sports practive twice a week from 5pm to 6pm, for example, decide now if homework is to be completed before or after the practice.  Set a time and stick to the routine.

Encourage, motivations, and prompting.  It is not a good idea to sit with your child and do math homework with him/her (reading should be done aloud).  Your child needs to practice independently and to apply what he/she is learning in class.  If your child cannot complete homework assignments alone, please contact me.

Understanding the knowledge.  When your child is practicing a skill, ask which step he/she finds difficult and easy and how he/she plans to improve speed and accurace with the skill.  If your child consistently cannot answer these questions, please contact me.

Reasonable time expectation.  If your child is spending too much time each night on homework, please contact me.  I expect 10-15 minutes of reading each night and math should take around 10 minutes to complete accurately.

Grading  I will check each homework assignment for content and timeliness.  I allow each child one "free" homework day.  This means that if your child forgets his/her homework once he/she does not change a card.  However, if it happens anymore during the nine weeks he/she will have to change a card each day until the homework is turned in.  Also, if I notice he/she not doing homework consistently I will contact you.  Your child will also have opportunities to earn a homework pass.  This pass will allow your child not to do his/her homework for the day.

If you have any questions about this please feel free to contact me by email or during my break times at school.
