Math

We
use the Saxon Math Series. There are no textbooks. Students
do the front side of the math page (side A) together in class, after a
new math concept has been taught. Usually, (but not always) the
back side (side B) is homework. Tests are usually every 5th
lesson.
Students will learn the addition and subtraction facts for numbers 0-9.
In class, we will use tricks to help memorize math facts.
Students will be required to take timed math fact tests over each
set that we cover. In first grade, we do not allow students to
use fingers on math facts. They must be memorized.
Here are some of the important skills that we will learn throughout the year. Please practice these at home also.
Memorizing addition and subtraction facts (0-9).
Writing a number sentence for a story problem.
Counting by 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's to 100.
Identifying even and odd numbers to 100.
Identifying and completing number patterns.
Counting mixed money (dimes, pennies, nickels).
Identifying coins (quarter, dime, nickel, penny) and the value of each.
Telling time to the hour and half hour.
Using a calendar.
