Lab Equipment, Safety and Microscope Overview

To begin class in Biology, we will learn about the microscope and proper lab techniques.   Each student will be required to identify the parts of a microscope along with lab equipment that will be used in Biology labs throughout the semester.  Upon earning a score of 85 or better on the quiz, the student will earn his/her lab license that will be required to enter the Biology lab.  If a score of "85" or better is not achieved, the student may take the quiz one additional time.  This is similar to a driver's license in that you need to maintain appropriate lab conduct throughout the semester to enjoy the privileges.  If a violation occurs, the student will receive a "hole" punched in his/her card.  Three punches in your license, and you will lose your opportunity to go to the lab.  (If you have been removed from the lab, you will receive zeros for any lab that occurs during your absence.)  To earn back your license,  a student will write a two page report about the incident and re-take the quiz given intially at the beginning of the semester.

Safety in the lab is critical.  There are many pieces of equipment that can be potentially hazardous.  We will discuss more lab safety in class with a powerpoint and discussion as well as how to handle injuries if they occur.
