A Little About Mrs. Hunley . . .

I am a Jefferson County native and attended high school at Jefferson County High School.
I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Biology from Carson-Newman in 1998 and working toward a Master's Degree.
I also attended college in Arizona at Glendale Community College and Phoenix College.
My favorite class in college was Field Botany and Microbiology.
Field Botany was a week long excursion in the mountains in the
East Tennessee area. I have always loved science and science is exploding now due to new discoveries and better
understanding of biological methods and technology.
I have two sons,
Daniel and David, that bring me tremendous joy. We enjoy
hiking and playing in the mountains in both Tennessee and North
Carolina.
Outside of science, one of
my favorite hobbies is running. Over the past couple of
years, I have developed a passion for running. I began
running to relieve stress, but it turned into something that I truly
enjoy. I currently run one 5K or 10K race each month, and I
have ran two half marathons in the past year. I
am working to complete a full marathon (26.2 miles) in Knoxville
this spring. Last summer (2007) I ran a full marathon in Anchorage,
Alaska. It was definitely one of the hardest things I have ever
done in my life. I also coach the boy's and girl's Cross County at Jefferson County High School.
I love Alaska so much that I returned during Christmas with my
church and other members from another church for a mission trip. The last day of the trip, I was
married to my husband by a glacier in subzero temperatures. We hope to
return there someday as we learn more about the culture, language and
life of the native people there. When you enter my room, you will
see that it definitely has the feel of the arctic tundra with a variety
of different organisms from plants to all kinds of animals painted in
their natural habitat of the arctic tundra

One of my most interesting
jobs was being a live-in nanny for two girls
in Glendale, Arizona. I had the opportunity to work at a school
district during the day as a teacher's aide and be a nanny after school. I also
worked at a school for autistic children which was one of the best
learning opportunities I have ever experienced. This job
confirmed my decision that I wanted to be a teacher.
I have also had the great privilege to work for Oak Ridge National
Laboratory for the past 2 summers doing research. I work closely
with a team of scientists that are in the Bioenergy Sciences Division
to test and conduct research on the possibility of using certain types
of bacteria to help
break down living material such as saw grass. With that breakdown
of material, it is believed that certain alcohols can be produced to
produce fuel that we need. It truly is an exciting area to work,
discover, and learn about the incredible science that takes place
literally in our backyard.
