Writing Standards for Grades K-2

Content Standard: The student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences.

The Goal Statement, found on the Tennessee Curriculum Frameworks Web Page is as follows:  Writing is a life-long, interactive process that is used to communicate with a variety of audiences and for a variety of purposes, adapting language conventions appropriately according to context.  Writing is an act of discovery, a means of personal growth, and a tool for clarifying knowledge.  To accomplish writing tasks more effectively, students need exposure to a variety of strategies, such as those included in the stages of the writing process in order to approach writing systematically.

Students who attend school and are grades Kindergarten through 2nd, are expected to learn the following:

There are many resources available for students, teachers, as well as parents, which can help teach a child how to write successfully.  Some writing resources available are:
  1. A lady named Joyce Corbin, who is an award winning reading specialist, is the author of Reading Success for Children: What Every Parent Should Know.  This book will show you how to help children learn to read and write.  This book can be found by visiting the Help Kids Read web site at www.helpkidsread.com
  2. One web site where a parent can find games that are fun and also help to teach their young children the basics of writing and reading can be found at www.writetoread.com The title of this page is Discover the hidden pleasure of 'how to' write and read.
  3. Books are a great way to teach a child how to read and write.  By visiting Amazon.com anyone can find a number of books that can be very useful in this area.  Amazon is one of the leading web sites where books can be found and bought straight from the Internet.
  4. Another useful web site for parents or teachers is Wal-Mart.com because here you can find CD-Roms, games, puzzles, flash cards, books, etc.  All of these can help a child learn how to write successfully.
  5. A third resource is a web site that has been the winner of the prestigious Directors' Choice Award from Early Childhood News.  The name of the web site is Fox in a Box: An Adventure in Literacy.  Fox in a Box promotes early literacy with a unique K-2 assessment system.
  6. All resources are able to be downloaded and printable. The curriculum is written and designed for preschool, kindergarten, first, second, and third grade students. The LearningPlace.com is a page that is dedicated to the world of learning and is open for anyone to use, just become a member.
  7. Education Planet is a web site where parents, teachers, as well as students can find resources that are helpful in teaching your child how to write.  Not only does this site contain information for children in grades Kindergarten through 2nd, it also has information for students through the college level.  This is a very informative site because it includes books, video tapes, journals, and many other types of resources.
  8. ePALS is the world's largest online classroom community, connecting over 3 million students and teachers through 47,006 profiles. Members from over 65,000 classrooms in 191 countries use our free online collaborative technology.  Connect with other ePALS members around the world, in ways that are both fun and educational.  Whether at home or school, by engaging in projects and creating new friendships, members can learn more about their world.
  9. Everything from Early Childhood Education, preschool through 2nd grade.  This web site not only has Language Art links, it also has links for many other subjects, such as, History, Reading, Mathematics, Technology, etc.  This is a wonderful site for all to enjoy.  This web site is called EduPuppy and can be found at http://www.edupuppy.com/
  10. Education Place: Elementary resources for teachers, students, and parents. Includes Reading/Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies Centers, Intervention, Professional Development, searchable activity database, educational games, and textbook support.  If you're a teacher or a student or just interested in finding out more about these subjects, you need to visit this web site.
