Writing Standards for Grades K-2
Content Standard: The student will develop
the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language
that can be read and interpreted by various audiences.
The Goal Statement, found on the Tennessee
Curriculum Frameworks Web Page is as follows: Writing is a life-long,
interactive process that is used to communicate with a variety of audiences
and for a variety of purposes, adapting language conventions appropriately
according to context. Writing is an act of discovery, a means of
personal growth, and a tool for clarifying knowledge. To accomplish
writing tasks more effectively, students need exposure to a variety of
strategies, such as those included in the stages of the writing process
in order to approach writing systematically.
Students who attend school and are grades Kindergarten
through 2nd, are expected to learn the following:

Write to acquire knowledge, promote lifelong communications,
and gain confidence as a writer.

Write frequently for a variety of purposes.

Use elements of the writing process as appropriate.

Practice a variety of prewriting activities to generate ideas.

Begin to recognize and demonstrate knowledge of mechanics
and standard spelling.

Write to respond actively and imaginatively to literature.

Begin to develop an understanding of and respect for multicultural
and ethnic diversity in language use, patterns, and dialects.

anyone can find a number of books that can be very useful in this area.
Amazon is one of the leading web sites where books can be found and bought
straight from the Internet.

Another useful web site for parents or teachers is Wal-Mart.com
because here you can find CD-Roms, games, puzzles, flash cards, books,
etc. All of these can help a child learn how to write successfully.

A third resource is a web site that has been the winner of
the prestigious Directors' Choice Award from Early Childhood News.
The name of the web site is Fox
in a Box: An Adventure in Literacy. Fox in a Box promotes early
literacy with a unique K-2 assessment system.

All resources are able to be downloaded and printable. The
curriculum is written and designed for preschool, kindergarten, first,
second, and third grade students. The LearningPlace.com
is a page that is dedicated to the world of learning and is open for anyone
to use, just become a member.

is a web site where parents, teachers, as well as students can find resources
that are helpful in teaching your child how to write. Not only does
this site contain information for children in grades Kindergarten through
2nd, it also has information for students through the college level.
This is a very informative site because it includes books, video tapes,
journals, and many other types of resources.
