Reading
Students really need to be reading at home. They can read any material they are interested in as long as it is easy enough for them to read it!
Research proves that 20 minutes of reading daily will improve vocabulary and success in school. I shared with the students today that they only need to reading 5 days out of the week. I will check reading logs on Mondays, and we will be doing fluency checks every two weeks. So, it will be pretty obvious who is reading and who isn't!
Also, reading is about to become a vital part in math. Word problems incorporating some algebraic concepts will be out next few lessons. This is where many students last year fell behind.
Math
This year has started off very well, and our test grades were FABULOUS! It is obvious that many of them have been working hard on their homework. It has really helped for parents to check homework, but please have them do the problem over themselves. It's much better for them to find their mistakes than someone guiding them through it.
Fact Practice
Many of us are doing great; however, some of us are not passing the 3's & 4's. We need to work on this at home. I will begin taking a grade on the multiplication facts soon, so practice is what will make them perfect.
Homework
If your child is having more than 40 minutes of homework, I need to know. I give them at least 10 minutes in class to do any assigned work.
Homework: Any work not finished in class is to be taken home for homework AND turned in by 8:30 a.m. the following morning.
Papers turned in AFTER 8:30 will have 10 points taken off the grade.
I will not be asking for papers. After 3 weeks of reminders, it is time for student's to take responsibility.
