My role as an elementary school counselor is composed of several aspects which include:
Visiting each classroom every two
weeks and discuss a variety of topics such as: character
education, anger management, problem solving, anti-bullying strategies,
career education, etc.
Individual counseling with
students who have been referred by the principal, teacher,
parents/caregivers, or self on a variety of topics including:
divorce, death, behavior, academics, friendship, family
situations, or any other areas of concern for the student.
Small group counseling on problem solving when children are not getting along.
Coordinate the Student Support
Team (S-Team) meetings for each school. The team can be comprised
of teachers, administrators, special services (reading specialist,
speech pathologist, Title I educators), counselor, and parents.
During this process I also give screeners for achievement and IQ
as well as observing the student in the classroom setting when
indicated.
