ACCELERATED
READING

The Accelerated Reading Program has been used at Piedmont School for almost 17 years.  It is a computer program that tests students on their understanding of books read independently in the classroom.  The difficulty of the book determines the book's point value.  Each 9-weeks, you will find a computer print-out in your child's progress report.  We will also discuss progress, or lack of it, being made in this area.  Students are given time during the day to read books that they choose.   Your child has a goal to reach for in AR.

Goals are points based on the Star testing results.   Based on that score, points are assigned and students  keep up with their points using a "pie" chart.  Each pie is divided into tenths because that is how points are given out when the computer grades the A-R tests taken.  Most books read are just 1/2 point so the child would color in 5 wedges of the pie if all questions were answered correctly.  It's fun to see the students get excited over coloring these in.   Students are coloring in "Stars" to show how many points they have earned during the entire year.  They have to earn 5 points before they can color the next star.

The students who achieved their goals for the 2nd 9-weeks will celebrate on Wednesday.
